Roads: roadwork signage

Mr FINN (Western Metropolitan) -- I raise a matter for the attention of the Minister for Roads and Ports. The matter concerns one of the more mysterious organisation on the face of the earth -- VicRoads. In particular I refer to the use by VicRoads of roadwork signage. It has been a matter of bewilderment to me for quite some time, and I seek some answers from the minister regarding this.

The matter concerns in particular the situation where there is roadworks signage but no roadworks. Just the other night on the Western Ring Road I was travelling near Calder Park Drive -- which is near the airport, for those who may not be aware of it. I was driving along doing 100 kilometres per hour, as I always do with that speed limit. All of a sudden we were told to do 80 kilometres per hour, so I went down to 80, and then we were told to do 60 kilometres per hour, so I went down to 60, and then we were told to do 40, so I went down to 40.

Then there was a sign saying, 'End roadworks', but I had not seen any roadworks whilst we had been decreasing speed.

I have to say that this situation is not unusual. It is a mystery to me why this happens, but it happens all too often, and in my experience it happens a fair bit around the western suburbs -- not that I would expect the minister to know that it happens in the western suburbs. He rarely gets there.

This situation is extremely confusing. It is annoying for motorists who obey the law. Of course there are motorists who do not care what signage is up. They drive straight through at 200 kilometres an hour anyway, but for those of us who obey the law it is confusing. It is extremely annoying and bewildering when motorists like me are trying to work out what is going on. Some cynics have suggested that this may be a plan by this government to raise a bit of money with speed cameras.

They confuse the punters and set up speed cameras and do a bit of revenue raising, which this government is particularly good at.

I ask the Minister for Roads and Ports to conduct a review of the use of roadwork signage by VicRoads. In particular I ask the minister to impress upon VicRoads as a result of this review the need for that organisation to be on the ball when it comes to using correct signage on the side of the road so that this sort of annoyance will not occur in future.

President, I take this final opportunity to wish you and all members of the house and their families a very merry Christmas.
