Footscray fine foes look to Libs
by Anthea Cannon
SAVE Our Footscray head Ken Betts has drawn a line in the sand over the area’s controversial parking cameras, urging people to take their frustrations to the ballot box.
The Leader has received a number of letters from residents both lauding the cameras and questioning fines.
Mr Betts, who liaised between the council and traders, said the argument had reached a stalemate.
“Even if the council wanted to take them out, the Government wants them,” he said.
“There’s been so much misinformation I think we should get the Opposition to commit to (removing the cameras) if they win.
“We need to move on and concentrate on other issues like kicking out the Labor party, if that’s what people want, as I think that’ll achieve more.”
Maribyrnong Council Corporate Services general manager Helen Morrissey said the council had not spoken to the government about the parking cameras.
Local Government Minister Richard Wynne declined to intervene on the issue after being called to do so by Liberal MLC Bernie Finn and Mr Betts.
Mr Finn said if his party was elected he would furiously push to scrap the cameras.
“When Local Government over-reaches itself the State Government have a responsibility to ensure (order is restored) and I will move heaven and earth to do so,” he said. Greens MP Colleen Hartland said she would meet the council and traders to learn more about the “difficult” issue.
Footscray Asian Business Association’s Wing La said they were still considering legal action but believed the election campaign was stronger.
“We’re preparing funding and information, we’ve put in Freedom of Information requests with the council. We’re working hard to get access to form the information basis of our legal claim,” Mr La said.
Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said while she believed the cameras implementation could have been handled better, it was a council issue.
“There’s not a lot I can actually do about it (even) whilst I might not agree,” she said.
